For about 28 years, Uganda’s Rhinos have been extinct following the political turmoil by during Idi Amin’s regime in early 1980s. At that time wildlife was not given enough attention and Rhinos were hunted down for their precious horn.
Filled with joy and happiness, the Executive Director of Rhinos in Uganda Angie Genade announced that the calf was born on the 24th June 2009 at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary which is 70km and a tourist site.
In her speech Angie said, “Nandi, one of the rhinos received from Disney Animal Kingdom gave birth to her first calf the evening before.”
Nandi was introduced in the Ziiwa Rhino Ranch located north-west of Kampala around 170 Km on Gulu Highway. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary allowed Rhinos to be introduced in the wild once again in Uganda and when Rhinos have multiplied, they will be re-introduced in Uganda National Parks for the Tourists to view them.
The director went on saying, the new mother was feeding well and so was the calf. Therefore no tracking the two for the safety of the rhinos and the tourists. However the rest of the herd was free to be tracked.
