Russian tourists flock to Czech Republic in record numbers

A record 8.08 million foreign tourists visited the Czech Republic last year, a year-on-year increase of 3 percent, according to an estimate issued by consulting company Mag Consulting and data released by the Czech Statistical Office.

By contrast, the number of domestic tourists at Czech accommodation facilities dropped between 2 percent and 3 percent in 2014, according to the estimate.

“With regard to overnight stays, 2014 was not all that successful. According to our prediction, the annual number of overnight stays in accommodation facilities in the Czech Republic dropped about 2 percent on the year to 42.4 million,” analyst Jaromír Beránek of Mag Consulting said.

Above all, domestic tourists’ stays in the Czech Republic shortened in 2014, according to Beránek.

In total, the number of guests at Czech hotels, boarding houses and camping sites increased 1 percent to 15.5 million, according the estimate.

The number of domestic guests declined because of Czech tourists’ bigger interest in holidays abroad, Beránek said.

Revenues from incoming tourism in the Czech Republic last year exceeded the record-high value from 2007, when it amounted to almost 140 billion Kč.
