What you need to know when planning gorilla tracking in Rwanda and Uganda

Tracking Mountain gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda is  tuff expedition one will undertake to encounter these endangered creatures.

Gorillas are trekked in mountainous areas of Volcanoes park of Rwanda or Bwindi forest of Uganda /Mgahinga park of Uganda and Virunga national park of DR Congo.

Due to the steep terrain of these national park, a person planning to trek these gorillas needs to be in a healthy condition because much energy is needed to hike for at least 30 minutes, Otherwise porters are available for hire to carry you to the gorillas and back at a negotiable fee depending on the distance to be covered.

This exercise normally takes 1 to 6 hours or so depending on the movement of the gorillas at the time of trekking.


Gorilla trekkers are advised to pack snacks for lunch and at least 2 litres of drinking water in case you feel thirsty or hungry during the exercise.

Trekkers need  Rack sacks where to pack their lunch, drinking water, camera, batteries etc.

All gorilla trackers are issued certificates upon completing their trekking exercises.


It is highly recommended to purchase your gorilla permit before the tracking date and gorilla permits can be bought through Uganda Wild life Authority or Rwanda Development Board.
