Trekking the mud for chimpanzee

The Ssisa Motor Sport fans were treated to yet another exciting rally at Ssisa off-course ground off Kitende on Entebbe Road, Uganda, when motor sport drivers displayed skills in defense driving in the City Tyres 4×4 Chimp Challenge.

City Tyres organized the 3rd annual event and was geared towards raising money to cater for rescued chimpanzees at Ngamba Island in Mukono, Uganda. The event saw both the environmentalists and corporate racing in their four-wheel drive automobiles. Registration for the competition was Shs300, 000 per vehicle and Shs30, 000 per head.

The event kicked off with wheel balancing, skill challenge, and divorce derby and mud race among other challenges that excited the fans who kept on cheering their favorites. Chimpanzee caretakers from Ngamba, clad in a Chimpanzee style kept moving around, imitating chimpanzee walks and screams and cheering the challenge competitors.

City Tyres Managing Director Mr. Abudullahi Ahmed said, “We have raised Shs75m and that is a big achievement compared to Shs47m that we raised last year. I hope this will help the chimpanzee sanctuary run for some time.”

Ms Lilly Ajarova, the Executive Director, Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wild life Conservation Trust that caters for the chimpanzees at Ngamba said that they spend Shs80m to feed the 44 chimpanzees at the island and Shs 20m for their veterinary services annually. She said that they manage the sanctuary through donations from well-wishers to help the rescued chimpanzees and create community awareness on the need to conserve them.
